TeneshyaNicole + Brushes + MakeUp = Artist
How I got started – Growing up I was never the one to wear makeup. I always thought I looked much better without it until this one particular day. I was heading out on a date and had a little discoloration in my face so I decided to stop by MAC to see if they could find me a temporary solution to cover up what I was trying to hide. Once the makeup artist was done beating my face and handed me the mirror, I was in a state of shock. I looked absolutely stunning! Before I left the store, I had purchased everything she used on my face, including all the brushes, primers, highlighting, couture, lipsticks, eyeshadows, foundation, moisturizers, finishing spray, blush and mineral powders. The very next day I tried to apply my makeup the same way and it didn’t quite come out the same, so I went back to the MAC counter to see if the MUA would be able to show me again, only this time she wasn’t there so I had another MUA show me the ropes. Now this MUA used all different brushes, and products and had me looking better that the first MUA who had initially done my makeup. While there she took the time and had given me step by step directions on how to apply each product while explain what the products had done for me. She also suggested that I watch a few YouTube videos as they would be very helpful. Again, I purchased all of the products used along with a different color foundation so that I could practice some of these looks on my daughter.
As time went on, I would practice looks on my daughter and all of her friends who were ages 18-20. I would then post before and after pictures of them on my personal Facebook page which attracted a lot of attention. Next thing you know, I had people wanting to book me for services as they were amazed with the transformations. Then one day, I had someone inbox me, a person I had never met, to see if I would be available to provide makeup services at a NY Fashion Week Runway Fashion Show. This person was the owner of her own makeup studio, located in Queens. The woman told me she would be looking to hire a new makeup artist to join her team and that someone referred her to me, so she wanted to meet with me. I scheduled an appointment to meet with her for an interview, where I had to do a basic makeup look on a model of my own. I took my little sister with me as the model and gave her a makeover in front of the makeup studio owner and was handed the job. Overly excited, there I was, on my way to apply makeup on high fashion models at the NY Fashion Week, where I was able to network and meet with lots of famous people connected to the industry. This experience just put me completely over the map. Eventually, I would began to build up my clientele and the rest is pretty much history! Now I currently have my own makeup business, Makeup By Teneshya Nicole, LLC and I must say, business is doing rather well. I am currently in the process of working on some amazing new projects/films within the next few months. I am really excited about the opportunities and I am looking forward to all that’s God has in store for me in the near future.
Share a time that your story helped someone.
A time where my story helped someone….Well, I can share with you a time where my services were able to help someone. After doing so well in the makeup industry, I decided I wanted to give back. So researched a few battered women shelters and set up a time with a few the directors so that I would be able to meet up with the battered women and give them makeovers. The reason for the makeover was to help them feel good about themselves. As a previously battered woman victim myself, I knew that this would help to lift their spirits because when in a situation like this, you are left with no self-confidence. The men you are dealing with tend to take your self –esteem away. The women who participated in the free makeovers were very happy and appreciative. One women even told me the makeover program has changed her life forever. She said that she felt beautiful and confident. A feeling she had not ever felt before. I cried with her during that moment, gave her my contact information, and told her to keep in touch. Till this day she and I remain friends.
What is your favorite product and brand of makeup?
My favorite product is really hard to describe as I have many favorites. If I had to choose just one, I’m guessing I will go with the Beauty Blender Sponge. I have found that nothing blends foundation better than the use of a Beauty Blender sponge. It’s the best thing that could have happened in the makeup industry.
